Samantha Wright - RPTS Hospitality Intern - Summer 2021
Howdy!
My name is Samantha Wright, a loud and proud member of the Texas A&M University class of 2022, currently working towards a B.S. in Recreation, Park, & Tourism Sciences with concentrations in Hospitality and Youth Development. I began my journey in hospitality after applying to an internship through the Texas A&M RPTS department website. Having never worked at a hotel before, I wasn't sure if I would have all of the qualifications the company was looking for, but the posting asked for applicants with a flexible schedule, quick thinking, the ability to work under pressure, and strong communication skills, all of which I knew I had. That would be the biggest lesson I want future students to pick up- apply to the job. Even if you don't have the most hands-on experience, the most industry knowledge, or check every box on the list, apply anyway. Looking back, I was pretty hard on myself in the first few weeks of my internship. I didn't think I was picking up on things very quickly, but my manager said I was learning the system in half the time it usually takes. I kept showing up early each day put-together and with a positive attitude, and after just a month with the company, talks of a promotion were in the works. Now, as I am typing this, I will finally begin training for my new position this week. So apply to the job. Look at the qualifications on an application as goals to reach during an internship. Show up. Ask Questions. Absorb Everything. Show why you were hired. |
